The Los Angeles Transgender Film Festival is seeking films for our fifth annual film festival. Whether you’re dealing with gender-specific issues or not, we will be screening many diverse works made by trans, genderqueer, and intersex artists, including comedy, dramedy, drama, experimental, animation, and more! The upcoming book Trans Bodies, Trans Selves is looking for contributors to its chapter on intersections of transgender / immigrant identities. I wish there was a law banning single-occupant restrooms from being signed with one gender or the other. There is no remotely legitimate reason to do that!
And that comment doesn’t even get into the flimsiness of the reasons why other public restrooms are gender-separated.

Gender liberated and gender free restrooms should be in every school and accessible for all. They recognize that not everyone is either a man or a woman, and provide a safe place for those who present as neither or lack passing privileges.
Working to get gender liberated facilities in schools is a great QSA campaign that can help and educate many.

non-native people using the term two-spirit to mean trans* identified (or using the term to identify themselves). it’s not. really, i promise, it’s that simple. for the record two-spirit is an pan-indian (pan means all, yes virginia there is more than one type of indian) term that was agreed upon at a conference of native QTBLG people as a term to idenitfy one’s self as native and queer. why is this important? because modern sexuality can and often is a colonizing force (read settler homonationalism by morgensen). in addition, sexuality does not happen in isolation it is within our experiences as indigenous peoples who exists as in nations that continue their imperialistic actions, policies, and violence.
example, me as a queer native woman could use the term two spirit. i am cis, femme identified, and light-skinned; it is still appropriate for me to use the term and not be offensive. i don’t use it cause i have some issues with pan-indianism being new to it cause i’m tlingit from alaska and it’s different up there.
so end story, if you’re white and talking about how you want to use/identify with the term two-spirit, it is wrong and offensive. Additionally, it’s even worse if you start spewing romanticized bullshit about two genders in one body, opposite gender in another body, more than one gender, etc… why? because although some tribes and nations (oh yeah, btw, there’s a lot of us and we’re different. we’re not just all indians) did have different ways of conceptualizing genders and models that could reflect current trans* narratives and discourses that could reflect that line of thinking; that’s just it, it was a different way of conceptualizing gender. so by continuing to impose colonial sexuality conceptions upon it, you’re continuing to erase indigenous identities, our varied and different cultures, and the fact that we are different people and nations.
to my indigneous peeps, let’s have fun with the term and continue to enrich it with our own amazing and different experiences of being queer/LBGT/fabulous/non-heterosexual/gender fucking/basically being our sweet native selves.
(oh, and DO NOT even think that admiring us and saying how it’s all sunshine and fucking daises with native communities in regards to queerness and how you like the term so much because of the above logic.) if you like it cause it’s awesome to not have a term that is not occurring in isolation or upholds a single identity politic, go for it, cause it is pretty fucking awesome.

With the bullshit coming from Ira Gray (A contributor to The Self Made Men) and Asher Bauer (The Owner of Transanachism), you really should be thinking about the type of people you want representing your, and our community.
The silence that’s been coming from all the blogs that “represent” the Trans* community, or even claim to provide information is quite frankly disturbing. The fact that this is a matter that doesn’t seem to be circulating very easily is even more disturbing.
WHO DO YOU WANT REPRESENTING YOU?
If the answer are rapists, and sexual abusers, then you have absolutely no right to so much as show your face.
If your answer is “give me proof” you have no right to even so much as weigh in.
If your answer is “Not people like this”, then I do suggest that you stop this silence, and speak the fuck up. It is the CAFAB community that is the majority supporting these people, your people, regardless of whether you want to deny it. They operate in your spaces, they created your spaces. It was your support, and assistance that built them up to a state of semi-celebrity
These are MY spaces just as much. And it is absolutely NOT OKAY that these spaces work like this.
Whenever anything like this happens to a member of our community, we speak up, and we show our communities capacity for support, and we rally in support around the victims, and survivors. It is completely shitty behaviour to ignore the problems within our own communities, and pretend that our “role models”, our “celebrities” are incapable of anything even slightly negative.

I absolutely agree with Maddy, I do not want these people representing or speaking for me, or the CAFAB trans* community.
I no longer support Ira Gray, and I do not support Asher Bauer. You will no longer find any content on this blog from now on that is from either of these people.

Pardon my Ignorance, but what does GSM stand for?

I’m also ridiculously “Ehn” about these flags, but I only feel qualified to talk about the bi and pan stuff, so shutting up now.
ETA: Also it’s pretty arguable whether the rainbow one is actually for GSM overall or if it’s just gay pride/queer pride. I dunno, I’m not interested in having that argument, just want to point out that there’s a debate.
Yeah I wouldn’t be comfortable with saying that the pride flag is representative of all GSMs, since it is a specifically queer symbol and a lot of people who fall under GSM do not fall under queer.
I’m increasingly uncomfortable with the spreading use of Gender and Sexual Minority to mean LGBTQ people on tumblr. it’s a term used in research, not an identity, and it includes a lot of unrelated groups- swingers, fetishists, circumcised women, etc.- not just queer people. I really dislike being lumped in with straight people during discussions of LGBTQ issues, and that’s what using the term GSM does.
I support using GSM because although I don’t class myself as being ‘queer’, asexuality could do with the help and support of community. As I’m sure other minority groups could. Why do I not like using the term LGBTQA?, because you have to include A on the end to include us. But it’s not just us is it? There are other groups that need this support network. But sticking more words onto the end of LGBTQ is going to make it ridiculously long (I’m pretty sure there is a VERY long version that tries to cover all the ‘minorities’) and the term is going to lose it’s meaning.
I’m not overly thrilled with the term GSM because it’s used in scientific (and negative) ways, but at least it allows for minority groups to feel included.
I’ve heard people who are bisexual, pansexual, asexual etc. complaining they don’t feel like they have a place in the LGBTQ, perhaps because it doesn’t solely focus on sexuality. I’ve also heard transgendered and genderqueer people saying they feel they don’t fit in because it focuses too much on sexuality…. both statements are contradictory. I think they’re contradictory because the LGBTQ doesn’t have a central meaning or ideology outside of ‘we’re different from the norm’. I personally think it would be better to separate sexuality from gender, giving both groups a central ideology instead of ‘we don’t fit into society’s expectations’ (which is what will happen if anymore letters get stuck on the end of LGBTQ$%£&”!!).
Obviously I’m not saying we destroy the LGBTQ community and build separate camps (it’s served an amazing service to so many people), but perhaps alternative ideas could be thought up to allow everyone to feel part of a community.
I did not know a fair amount of the points that have been brought up. They are quite valid, and it is clear to me now that I need to do more research on the term ‘GSM.’

Why is this relevant to me, personally? Well, I’m going to be living in Beverly for school for at least the next four years. And this is where I would be working out, because my school doesn’t have a gym. If I can’t work out, that’s a major no no.

This is really important to me.
The U.S. Customs and Immigrations Service recently issued an official Policy Memorandum stating that USCIS will no longer require proof of sexual reassignment surgery to update an individual’s legal gender on all customs and immigration paperwork. Instead, USCIS will accept either an updated birth certificate, passport, or court order or a letter from any licensed physician stating that the individual has had “appropriate clinical treatment for gender transition”. Furthermore, the new USCIS policy explicitly states that USCIS will issue corrected documents for transgender people regardless of any state, local, or foreign requirements to the contrary.
The new USCIS policy also establishes specific guidelines for marriages in which a partner is transgender. Basically, USCIS will fully recognize any heterosexual marriage which was valid in the jurisdiction where it took place. USCIS will presume all marriages involving a transgender person to be valid unless the originating jurisdiction has a specific law or precedent to the contrary, including both heterosexual marriages performed after a legal change of gender and heterosexual marriages performed before a legal change of gender.
Yet another hugely important pro-transgender policy change by the Obama Administration which is going largely unheralded by the white-centric, cis-centric, marriage-obsessed LGb(t) movement. Obama has done more for us in less than four years than the entire LGb(t) nonprofit complex has done in its entire history.
Please note: ”USCIS will presume all marriages involving a transgender person to be valid unless the originating jurisdiction has a specific law or precedent to the contrary,” means that if marriage involving a transgender person is illegal in the originating jurisdiction, USCIS does not recognize the marriage as valid.

This all takes place in NW Georgia, USA during the year 2005-2006
I went to a regular, public middle school. I was a regular teenager. Acne ridden, confused, emotionally unstable, etc. But while other teenagers were experiencing their first kisses, and some were experiencing so much more, I was just trying to grasp who I was. In fourth grade, I had come out as gay to my mom. I had no other word for anything that wasn’t completely cis and hetero-normative. In the fashion of my mom as I remember her to have been at the time. She rolled over, told me it was probably just a phase, and promptly tried to get back to sleep.
Now I was in eighth grade, my mom and my sister had moved away and my dad and I were at ends. I went to school everyday and I tried to understand who I was and what I was. Was I a crossdresser, was I bisexual? I didn’t know, I was trying to grasp for some form of self - identity, and the ways I did it gave plenty of ammunition to the bullies in my school.
I ‘went out’ with this guy that year, it was the most stereotypical of trivial middle school relationships. He was constantly ‘cheating’ on me and dumping me. And still, because we went out at all, (let me say that I don’t regret it, especially not for the reasons I’m about to talk about) people became rude and crude.
I imagine the baby blue eyeliner running down my cheeks and the purple lip gloss on my lips didn’t help.
But I couldn’t walk from class to class without hearing faggot yelled half a million times. And back before I’d even had my first kiss, people were asking me if I was the ‘pitcher’ or the ‘catcher’.
And they’d walk away from me with binders and books covering their asses, like because I wasn’t heterosexual I was automatically some feral creature that wanted to and would fuck anything and everything.
Then, as now, I just want to be loved.
The worst part was the kid who was like my next door neighbor. I have a quarter-mile long drive way, and at the time I had to walk it to get from my bus stop to my house. This kid would get off the bus after me and get on his 4-wheeler to catch me on the way down the drive way.
And he’d tell me we wouldn’t have any problems if I just wouldn’t say anything.
If I wouldn’t act so weird.
If I’d just keep my faggot mouth shut and act like a ‘normal’ fucking person.
And when that didn’t work, he’d bring his cousins out, all bigger then me, except for the one that was younger then me. And, standing in a half circle around me, they’d tried to entice me, a pacifist, into a fight.
Because I was queer and they didn’t like it.
